Data-centre capacity outside mainland China in which Chinese firms hold a role, as owner, operator, tenant, user, builder, equipment supplier or financier. Every row cites the page that supports the row, a script has checked that the cited passage is on that page, and every row carries a grade of evidence: primary source, secondary source or unconfirmed. The codebook defines the three grades.
Red points mark places with at least one site, and blue points mark places with cloud regions only. Each point marks the centre of the city that the source names, not the building.
The estimate counts each data centre once. Where a firm reports capacity by market or for the whole firm, as DayOne and Global Switch do, the estimate takes the firm's figures in place of the figures of the firm's sites. The low bound counts only figures from a primary source, which is the firm, another party to the site or a public authority, at sites where the role of the Chinese firm is not graded unconfirmed and the status of the site is known. The high bound counts every figure and adds the IT power that Epoch AI estimates above the figure that the sources state. Figures of IT capacity, of power and of an unspecified basis are added as the sources state them.
